STEVE ROSS in "Rhythm & Romance" @ The Algonquin (New York)
Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 5:48AM

Steve Ross’ recent Oak Room triumphs celebrated the genius of Stephen Sondheim, Alan Jay Lerner and Fred Astaire.
In his new show, “Rhythm and Romance,” Steve segues from tributes to individual artists to an exploration of two essential aspects of the Great American Songbook. Rhythm and Romance are just two simple words with endless variations, as Steve will reveal with…”Broadway Rhythm,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “My Romance,” “Isn’t It Romantic” and “I’ll Take Romance,” among others. Brian Cassier will assist on bass.
Steve Ross, dubbed the Crown Prince of Cabaret in New York, has long since expanded his realm to embrace other cities, countries and continents. He has helped sustain the popularity of the songs of Cole Porter, Noel Coward and their matchless peers in such varied venues as the Ritz in London and Paris, the Imperial in Tokyo and festivals in Hong Kong, Perth and Spoleto. He has hosted radio series for BBC and NPR, and continues to participate in popular concert and lecture series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the 92nd Street Y. He recently enjoyed a month’s sojourn in Australia where he headlined the first Melbourne Cabaret Festival and the world renowned Sydney Opera House. This past December he appeared in New Haven with the world famous Yale Concert Band celebrating the songs of Yale alumus Cole Porter. He finished the year with performances in South Florida at the Kravis Center, which the Palm Beach Daily News called “a master class on the cabaret style…weaving in and out of one great song after another.”
“Of how many other performers can it be said that unadorned voice and piano make for a complete and completely engrossing show?”
- Stephen Holden, The New York Times
“Ross has a gentle, vocal style, not unlike that of Astaire,
and he sings from the heart.” - VARIETY
