EGOT winning Orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and The Broadway Moonlighters with Special Guest Rebecca Faulkenberry & Jim Caruso's Cast Party March 19, 2012 @ Birdland (New York)

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony-winning orchestrator JONATHAN TUNICK is returning to Birdland with his Broadway Moonlighters on Monday, March 19 at 7pm.

This is a rare public performance by Broadway’s premier orchestrator, who will be leading a big band of Broadway’s finest musicians in his own arrangements. Tunick’s last appearance with the Broadway Moonlighters (with surprise guest vocalist Barbara Cook) was standing room only.

Rebecca Faulkenberry, the dazzling star of Broadway’s Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark, will be the Special Musical Guest. Bermuda native Rebecca Faulkenberry took on the role of Mary Ann in Spiderman direct from performing in the Broadway company of Rock of Ages. Her theatre credits include Aunt Dan and Lemon (Royal Court, West End); High School Musical 1 (Hammersmith Apollo, West End) and 2 (Fox Theatre); The Shape of Things(RADA); The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse); The Royal Family, Slow Dance With a Hot Pickup, Smoke on the Mountain. TV/film; “Doctors” (BBC1).

Jonathan Tunick is one of the only 12 people in the world who are an EGOT, which means that he won at least one of all of the four major entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The other ones in chronological order are Richard Rodgers, Barbra Streisand, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, Liza Minnelli, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols and Whoopi Goldberg…and Tunick has worked with all eleven winners! He won Broadway’s 1997 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for Titanic, and was nominated in the same category three other times: in 2000 for Marie Christine, in 2001 for Follies, and in 2003 for Nine The Musical. He won the 1977 Oscar for Best Music/Original Song Score and Adaption for A Little Night Music. The Grammy came in 1988 for his Instrumental Arrangement of No One is Alone, performed by Cleo Laine. His 1982 Emmy was for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction for Night of 100 Stars. Tunick’s principal instrument is the clarinet.

Cabaret and Broadway impresario Jim Caruso hosts the world famous ‘extreme’ open-mic night to remember every Monday night at Birdland in New York City.

Jim Caruso’s Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It’s a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars like Liza Minnelli, Chita Rivera and Michael Feinstein hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. At the Cast party, the best and the brightest stars and stars-to-be in cabaret, jazz, musical theatre and everything in between take their turns to sing their favourite tunes.

Since starting in 2003, it’s become a New York institution where who’s who of cabaret, jazz, musical theatre and everything in between, emerging talents and their fans gather and sing their hearts out.

Jim Caruso runs a tight ship with his brilliant emcee skills. Alongside him are musical directors Tedd Firth or Billy Stritch at the piano and Steve Doyle on bass. It’s a party that would happen “if somehow David Letterman and Ed Sullivan threw a hip house party around the nine-foot concert grand piano.”
