Submissions for the 2011 Adelaide Cabaret Festival close tomorrow on the 10th of December at 5.00pm (Australian Central Standard Time).  If you have great cabaret chops and would like to be considered for the 2010 program, make sure you don’t miss the deadline, as strictly no late entries are accepted.

With the program launch date (2nd of April 2011) and Festival dates (10-25 June 2011) announced, the excitement and anticipation continues to grow for the biggest cabaret festival in the world. 

I’ve already been wondering who would be the headline act, who would be discovered and re-discovered as fabulous cabaret artists and which show will thrill and enrapture.  I have sat there with shivers running down my spine, laughed until my side is splitting and been moved to tears in the last nine times that I attended the festival. 

This submission deadline means we’re one step closer to the 11th Adelaide Cabaret Festival.  Every time I open the program after the launch, I feel like a little kid in a candy store, wanting to try EVERYTHING in sight, and it’ll be exactly the same next year.  Having a bigger pool of quality talent to choose from will no doubt make the selection process better. If I had what it takes, I’d be putting my application in for sure – it won’t be in this lifetime (do I hear collective sigh of relief?) but I do hope as many stellar cabaret artists as possible will be making their submissions for their spot in the program.

The in-depth interview article, accompanied by chock-full of photos, exploring his ‘dark side’ covers topics like his childhood and family in Australia, how his career evolved in New York City, his love for mythology and of course, his hit show Morphium.  The piece in particular focusses on his extremely successful season and his experience at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. There are many references to his performance during that time, and I revisited the brilliant evening where everyone in the house was completely and utterly bewitched by him.

Fresh from his recent gig in Santa Barbara, the cover boy Kim Smith has been busy developing his new show. If in NYC, go see him at Vlada Lounge (331 W 51st St New York) - Kim is a regular guest star on Vauxhall Cabaret, hosted by Raven O on Monday nights from 10:30pm. It’s a fabulous venue and show, plus, you just might get to hear the latest tune or two from his new-show-in-the-making.

Kate Ceberano to be the next Adelaide Cabaret Festival Director

Adelaide Festival Centre’s CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier announced today that performer and songwriter Kate Ceberano will take over from David Campbell as the Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s artistic director in 2012 and 2013.

Kate Ceberano is one of the most well-known Australian musician whose career spans quarter of a century in the music industry. She’s sold over a million albums sold in Australia. In addition to being a recording artist, she’s also appeared in musicals (Jesus Christ Superstar), TV shows and performed with Orchestras.  She’s also won multiple ARIA and MO Awards as well as a Logie Award.

Ceberano is no stranger to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.  Last year, she premiered her sold-out show ‘Love and the Bottom Line’ featuring music of Burt Bacharach.

She has huge shoes to fill – founding director Julia Holt built up the internationally acclaimed cabaret festival to the largest of its kind in the world. Her successors David Campbell and Lisa Campbell continued/is continuing to grow the festival and broke the box office as well as attendance records for the 10th year anniversary this year.

According to the report on ABC News, she is unlikely to make any radical changes and is probably going to “make it more of what it is”.

I must say I did a double take when I first read the news. It came as a complete surprise to me. This adds to the ongoing trend of performing artists being appointed to the festival director’s role – David Campbell, Emma Clair Ford (Short + Sweet Cabaret Director) and now Kate Ceberano. 

I’m not quite sure what to make of it as yet.  There were a few comments on Adelaide Now report about her being a Church of Scientology member.  I’d like to think her choice in religion would have any impact on how she runs the festival.  It’s not as though she has written shows about Scientology (Battlefield Earth, anyone?), and forced her audience to join the church. 

 I’m all for keeping it fresh by having new directors on board on a regular basis, as long as they continue the sheer magic that is the Adelaide Cabaret Festival by continuing to present diverse, exciting and inspiring programs for years to come.

NIDA acting graduate, Harbridge has appeared in My Fair Lady, Fiddler On The Roof, Cabaret and 3penny Opera, and won Most Outstanding Performance for her Lady Macbeth at the GATS Festival, Beijing. She has appeared across mediums in music, theatre and radio.

Bernadette Peters on Bio

Bernadette Peters’ two concerts at the opening weekend of the 2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival were filmed for dvd and screening on cable. I haven’t had a chance to see the whole concert special yet. It was premiered on June 27 on the Foxtel Bio channel here in Australia. For those of you who missed it like I did - here’s a teaser to enjoy in the meantime!
