Have you ever sat in the audience of a cabaret show wondering how that could be YOU on stage? Or you’ve tried cabaret before and want to develop and broaden your skills.

The Australian Cabaret Summer School is an intensive week-long program designed to deliver all the training and support you need to create a ten minute original solo cabaret piece. 

Working with industry mentors who will guide you through the processes of deciding on a concept, selecting songs, devising a script and polishing your presentation, the Summer School provides you with the tools and encouragement to guide you to a successful performance.   

Each participant at the Australian Cabaret Summer School will receive individual sessions with vocal, musical and writing mentors in addition to masterclass opportunities and group workshops throughout the week.

The Summer School culminates in a Cabaret Showcase performance where each participant will perform the ten minute piece they have devised during the week with a professional musical director, in a cabaret venue with full sound and lighting production.

MENTORS INCLUDE:

Catherine Campbell

Catherine is a singer, actor and teacher with a specific interest in cabaret. She has performed in music theatre and cabaret around Australia and in the USA, and has appeared in all Adelaide Cabaret Festivals to date.  She has produced and written many solo shows, and was the first South Australian (and second Australian) to attend the Cabaret Conference at Yale, for which she was awarded a scholarship and an Arts SA grant.

Catherine was co-creator of the award-winning cult show “Berlin Cabaret”, founder of comedy cabaret “Gentlemen Prefer Curves” and co-wrote/starred in Frank Ford’s “My Blue Angel:Marlene Dietrich” which has toured South Australia and had a short season in NYC.

A highly sought after vocal/performance coach and singing teacher, Catherine teaches Music Theatre and Performance at Uni SA.

Matthew Carey

Matthew is a highly sought after pianist, arranger and musical director, who works extensively in Australia and abroad. In recent years, he has performed with some of the biggest names in cabaret including Tony Award winners Lillias White, Donna McKechnie and Liza Minnelli. 

Nominated for a Helpmann Award for his musical direction of “Metro Street” (State Theatre Company, 2009), Matthew was Associate Musical Director for the London revival of Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George” (2005-06).  He accompanied acclaimed British song stylist Barb Jungr at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and subsequently on her first Australian Tour.
 

At the Adelaide Cabaret Festival he has assisted Broadway composers Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World, 2003), Maltby & Shire (Closer than Ever, 2004; Take Flight, 2004), and Andrew Lippa (A Wild Evening with Andrew Lippa, 2005; john & jen, 2005), was musical director of Ann Hampton Callaway’s “To Ella with Love” and worked with artists including Robyn Archer, Caroline O’Connor, Christine Anu, Christopher Green and Ali McGregor.

Carey’s Cabaret in 2011 included Le Gateau Chocolat, Damsel in Shining Armour, Viva la Franglaise, High School Cabaret, The Other American Songbook, New York Nights, Lila Gray and School for Red Hot Mamas.

Matthew continues to develop cabaret shows locally and nationally - current projects include Gady Lala, Debra Byrne’s RIPE and the upcoming LoveBirds.

 Michael Morley

Educated at the Universities of Auckland, Zuerich and Oxford (Christ Church), MM taught German at Auckland before moving to Flinders University, Adelaide, where he held the Chair of Drama from 1984 till 2010. He has published articles on Brecht’s poetry and drama, and on his collaborations with Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler, as well as contributing translations and editorial material to the Methuen edition of Brecht’s poems and plays. He has been President and Vice-President of the International Brecht Society, is a member of the advisory board of the complete edition of the Works of Kurt Weill, and is the Australasian correspondent for the International Hanns Eisler Gesellschaft.

Over many years he has written theatre and music reviews and articles for a variety of publications, including THEATRE AUSTRALIA, THE NATIONAL TIMES,THE AUSTRALIAN, THE AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW, OPERA NEWS (NEW YORK), THE KURT WEILL NEWSLETTER, THE ADELAIDE REVIEW and THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK REVIEW.He has also contributed translations for the English edition of the collected poems of Alfred Brendel.

As a professional musician he has been musical director and pianist for performances of HAPPY END, THE THREEPENNY OPERA, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRECHT (Artaud Theatre, San Francisco), and was dramaturg and musical associate for the double bill THE LINDBERGHFLIGHT and THE SECOND HURRICANE (2000 Adelaide Festival of Arts) and ASSASSINS (Space Theatre). He has also worked on numerous cabaret shows, ranging from the music of Jacques Brel and Rodgers and Hart to SING YOUR OWN MUSICALS ( Melbourne Festival 2004, and subsequently successive Adelaide International Cabaret Festivals).

With Robyn Archer he has collaborated on a number of performances since 1977, presenting Weimar Cabaret and the works of Brecht and his musical  collaborators in concerts throughout Australia, as well as in Hong Kong, Bourges, Ljubljana, Oxford and Honolulu. He has also co-devised and performed programmes of French and American/Australian cabaret with Robyn Archer at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, in Canberra, and was musical director for the production JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS at the Street Theatre Canberra.

Libby O’Donovan

Hailed by the Sydney Morning Herald as “a powerful, sassy performer”, Libby O’Donovan has performed for over ten years across Australia and around the world. Her achievements include performances in Tokyo, New York City and Canada with various jazz and Cabaret acts including The Meredith Crocksley Project, Coco’s Lunch and her co-creations, Flat on your Bacharach and Women with Standards, for which she won a Green Room award for her work as Musical Director.

Libby has starred as a cabaret and jazz performer in several major festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe, Sydney Spring Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, the International Jazz Educators Convention, Adelaide Cabaret Festival (including working with New York’s Jason Robert-Brown and Andrew Lippa), Melbourne Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, and the Wangaratta Jazz Festival.

Her theatre credits include Matthew Robinson’s ‘Metro Street’, Doppio Parallelo’s ‘DJ Squat’, ‘Contaminations Lab’ and ‘The Last Child’, Vitalstatistix’s ‘Way Dead Cool’ and Patch Theatre Company’s ’Sharon Keep Ya Hair On!’ 

Libby continues to perform Australia-wide as well as fulfilling her commitments as a composer, arranger and musical director.
